Intensive Courses for Welsh Learners

LANGUAGE COURSES 2010

Welsh in a Weekend
September 2010 (all levels)
Find out more...

Every Easter and summer, the Department runs intensive week long language courses, and in January and September weekend courses, especially for adult learners. The teaching is undertaken by experienced university tutors who specialise in the teaching of Welsh as a second language.

Our intensive language courses are ideal for those wishing to learn to speak the language over a short period of time. Study is demanding but enjoyable. You will get a full understanding of the language, its grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation patterns. There will be an emphasis on developing your communicative effectiveness, so you will increase your confidence, fluency and ability to use the language outside the classroom.

Small classes ensure a high level of individual attention with emphasis given to pair and group work. We try to make the learning experience fun and challenging at all times, to motivate you to work hard and get results!  You will be in a group of students who share the same goal of wanting to achieve fluency and success in Welsh.

Become part of a friendly, demanding, but enjoyable study environment - the perfect way to learn Welsh!  The fact that the University is located in the heart of Welsh-speaking Wales provides learners with ample opportunity to practise the language.  The courses are accredited university courses.

The following levels are normally available:

Summer Course 2009Entry
Classes for beginners. The emphasis is very much on conversational Welsh - discussing personal details and past events.

Foundation
Expand on your speaking skills. Family, work and hobbies are among the topics covered.

Intermediate
The emphasis is still on speaking, but a little more writing, reading and
listening is introduced. You should feel comfortable holding a
conversation on everyday topics by the end of this level.

Advanced
You will still concentrate on oral skills, but also be gradually introduced
to Welsh radio, television and newspapers. Attention will also be given to writing skills.

Proficient

Classes for people who speak Welsh fluently (as a first or second written language) who wish to improve their command of the language.
