Information for Applicants in Care or Leaving Care
In 2004 a research project, commissioned by the Frank Buttle Trust, exploring the experiences of care leavers who enter higher education, was completed. The resulting report detailed the experiences of three groups of students and the challenges that they had faced. It also included a number of important recommendations about ways to support students during their studies.
One recommendation was that applicants for courses should be able to disclose on their UCAS application form that they have spent time in care. This would help University admissions tutors to be aware the educational and life challenges that applicants may have faced and overcome; and enable Student Support staff to provide information about support and guidance to applicants with different support needs e.g. accommodation, finances etc.
When completing a UCAS Application Form you will be asked if you have spent time in care. This information will be used by the University to contact applicants about the support systems available to them at the University.
