Study Skills : Bibliographies

In the Bibliography, you should give full references to works you have consulted, in alphabetical order of author’s surname.  Give a separate list of the ancient sources you have used, in alphabetical order of the ancient authors, showing which edition you consulted.  If you are not sure how to give bibliographical references, you can use the following forms:

For books

Surname, initials (year of publication), Title of Book (in italics), place: publisher.

              e.g. Duff, A. M. (1928), Freedmen in the Early Roman Empire, Oxford:Clarendon Press.

For chapters in books with editors

Surname of chapter author, initials (year of publication), ‘Title of chapter’, in Surname & initials (ed.), Title of Book (in italics), place: publisher, first & last pages of chapter.

              e.g. Fisher, N. R. E. (1990), ‘The law of hubris in Athens’, in Cartledge P., Millett P. & Todd S. (eds.), Nomos, Cambridge: C.U.P., 23-138.

For articles in journals

Surname, initials (year of publication), ‘Title of article’, Title of journal (in italics), volume no., first & last pages of article.

              e.g. Tod, M. (1950), ‘Epigraphical notes on freedmen’s professions’,      Epigraphica 12, 3-26.

For ancient sources

Name of ancient writer, Title of book (in italics), name of translator (year of publication), place: publisher.

              e.g. Ovid, Heroides, translated by H. Isbell (1990), Harmondsworth: Penguin.

For items taken from the WWW

Name of author (date), Title of page, URL, date accessed

              e.g. Konstan, D. (2000), Women, ethnicity and power in the Roman Empire,

              http://www.uky.edu/ArtsSciences/Classics/konstan1.pdf, accessed on 1/4/2004.
