Choosing Your Modules

General Information

If you are taking an MA programme, you will need to take the compulsory Methodology modules as early as possible during your studies as they provide the foundation for your entire degree.

Please discuss your choice of modules first with either the Director of Postgraduate Studies, Dr. James Richardson, or your personal tutor before completing the official registration form.  Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you need any help with the planning of your programme for next year.

Full-time MA/Diploma students

Full-time MA students need to take 180 credits per year.  Full-time Diploma students take 120 credits per year.

Part-time students

Part-time students can choose the number of credits they would like to take.  Most students take either 40 or 60 credits per year, but other amounts are possible depending on your work or family commitments.  If you are a part-time distance learner and would like to take 60 credits, you are advised to take one module during each of the three terms in order to spread your workload as evenly as possible throughout the academic year.

Please note that, from a registration and financial point of view, it is often easier to add a module during the academic year than to withdraw from one.  It is often wise to be conservative in your estimate of the number of modules you are able to take as a part-time student.  Most modules will take more time than you think.

If you are a Licence student, you need to decide whether you would like to complete the programme in two or three years.  Students on the two year programme take 60 credits of language modules per year; the three year programme requires 40 credits per year.

Distance learners

All non-linguistic modules are available for distance learners in each of the three teaching terms (Michaelmas, Lent and Easter) subject to agreement with the Director of Postgraduate Studies, Dr. James Richardson.

Linguistic modules need to be taken in the term they are taught on campus (all modules ending in I are taught in Michaelmas term, all those ending in II are taught in Lent term, no linguistic modules are taught in Easter term).

Examinations for all language modules taught during Michaelmas term take place in December, those taught during Lent term will be examined in May.  Please note that advanced language modules can be taken more than once (e.g. you can take Advanced Latin I several times because different texts will be read each time the module is taught).  Details of texts read for the advanced modules can be found in the module descriptions.
