Readers' Tickets

You must first obtain a University of Wales Lampeter email account from the University Computing Service (you will need this when filling in your library registration form)

You must then complete a Library registration form (obtainable from the Library)

You must also supply a passport-sized photograph, and a copy of your Certificate of Registration for the current session

Distance learning students should also ask the Library for a pack (Guide to Library Services and Resources) which outlines the services and facilities available to those studying off-campus.

Borrowing

Postgraduates can have ten normal loans at any one time. All categories of reader are also entitled to two restricted loans. Most books and periodicals may be borrowed, with the exception of Reference books, theses, unbound periodical parts, material classed as Special Collections, and heavily-used items held in the Restricted Loans collection which are marked as ‘Library-Only Loan’ on the catalogue record.

Distance students can find more details here for details of borrowing arrangements: please note that there may be some restrictions on sending material abroad.

Departmental Inter-Library Loan requests (ie, borrowing of books from other libraries when the items are not held in stock in Lampeter) are available only to postgraduate students. Any registered reader can, however, apply for a personal Inter-Library Loan item, which will be billed by the Library at normal Interlending charges.

For postgraduates, there are four recall dates per year at which all Library books must be returned or renewed, although any book may be recalled before the return date if requested by another reader.

Restricted Loans

Library-Only Loans, CD-Roms: Due back six hours from time of issue OR by closing time on day of issue

One Day Loans (including videos and DVDs): Due back by 10.00 am the following morning.

Two Day Loans: By closing time 2 days after the day of issue

Three Day Loans: By closing time 3 days after the day of issue.

Fines

Ordinary loans which are overdue, but not recalled by other readers, will receive a fine.  Loans which are overdue, having been recalled, are also subject to a fine.  Further information about this is available from the library.

Inter-Library Loans

The Inter-Library Loan service is only available to postgraduate students in the Department of Classics. You should check the library catalogue before ordering any item, and also ensure that any journal articles you require are not available electronically through JSTOR.

Orders are accepted for books, journal articles, theses and conference papers. Some categories of item, for instance computer files and manuscript material, cannot be obtained: the Inter-Library Loan staff can advise you about this when ordering. No Inter-Library Loan book can be sent abroad.

Students should ask for periodical or book forms at the Inter-Library Loan Office: distance students can email requests to k.miles@lamp.ac.uk or p.daniels@lamp.ac.uk. The library will endeavour to keep you informed of the progress of the request, but if an item is wanted for a deadline, please put in your request early enough to allow time for it to be obtained from the supplying library. When an item is received by the library, you will be notified by email that it is available for collection. Photocopies are normally sent as retention copies.

The standard loan period is six weeks, and readers are asked to complete their work on the items by the due date: loan renewals are not normally allowed, since there is a charge involved in extending the loan period. All books should be returned directly to the Lampeter Inter-Library Loan office and not to the supplying library.

Distance learners can check the library’s holdings from the library catalogue page. The library will forward material to any registered UK user who lives off-campus, with the following provisos:

  • students must have a current Lampeter library card
  • any Inter-Library Loan request must have departmental authorisation before the request is submitted to the Library
  • students must pay the postage charges of any item forwarded, or any photocopying done: photocopying is charged at the rate of 10p per sheet

All requests will be dealt with as quickly as possible, but are subject to staff availability at the time of requesting.

Access to Other Libraries

For access to the National Library of Wales, in Aberystwyth, please obtain an application form from the Library prior to your trip: they can also provide you with more information regarding the NLW collections, web catalogue and access arrangements.

UK-based distance learning students can also join a Library Access Scheme.  This is a co-operative venture between Higher Education libraries which enables UK-based part-time and distance students to borrow material from other libraries.  Further information can be obtained from the library website.

Photocopiers

Card operated photocopiers are available in the Library.  Residential postgraduates (and visiting non-residential postgraduate students) are allowed one photocopy card of 50 copies per term throughout the duration of their studies by arrangement with the Department.

Information Services

All registered students are entitled to have an account on the central University computer system which allows them to use the University IT suites, to send and receive electronic mail, to search library catalogues and access the internet.  Use of the system is free, although printing is charged after an initial free quota.  There are courses available on campus to acquire the skills needed to use these systems.

Distance students can apply for an e-mail account by filling in the distance student e-mail account application.

The Department intends to use Lampeter e-mail addresses, where possible, to communicate with students; it is essential therefore that you activate and use your e-mail account.  Lampeter e-mail accounts can be accessed remotely here.
