Postgraduate Studies

Prospective Students

The Department of Classics has a fast developing postgraduate student body, both residential and working at a distance, the latter’s growth a reflection of our strong commitment to reaching students beyond the immediate campus. We offer two forms of postgraduate degree: a range of taught schemes (MA, Diploma, Certificate and Licence); and research degrees by thesis (MPhil and PhD).

Most people undertaking a taught scheme will have the MA as their ultimate goal. The Diploma, Licence and Certificate can all be seen as pathways to our various MA schemes, as well as being valuable PG qualifications in their own right. A student who is unsure about his/her ability to cope with the demands of postgraduate work might, for example, initially sign up for the Certificate. Having successfully completed the 60 credits required for the Certificate, they would then be eligible to transfer to the Diploma or the MA. If they chose the former pathway, they would take a further 60 credits. Having successfully completed these credits, giving them a total of 120 credits, they could either accept their Diploma qualification or, following the more popular path, transfer to the MA, which requires them to write a dissertation, worth a further 60 credits. The Licence can function in a similar way.

The majority of our degrees are available both on campus and at a distance. All postgraduate degrees can be taken on either a full-time or part-time basis, with the exception of the Licence, which is part-time only.
