The Department offers all its Postgraduate
degrees, both taught and research degrees, on a distance-learning
basis, with the current exception of the UWICAH MA
(/Certificate/Diploma) in Ancient History. This method
is particularly useful for those who have other commitments
that make full-time residence difficult. Taking a degree
by distance learning also offers students more flexibility
and the opportunity to work at their own pace. Students
are in regular contact with their tutors and/or supervisor – by
mail, e-mail, phone or fax – throughout their
period of registration.
Each MA/Diploma/Certificate module is accompanied by a series of handouts (a Module Pack) which will give detailed guidance for the topics studied. These handouts will give a short introduction to each topic, include suggestions for further reading, a list of passages to read (if appropriate), and a list of discussion points. The material will be sent to students as they progress. Students will be asked to send in short contributions during the course of the module. Details of this will be given on the handouts.
MPhil and PhD students work closely together with their supervisor on their chosen area of research. Work is sent in by mail or as an e-mail attachment and supervisors can always be contacted to discuss work.
Students who take their degree by distance learning often
find it useful to come to Lampeter for a short period to
discuss their work in more detail with their tutors or supervisors
or to attend some of the classes offered to the residential
students. Campus accommodation is available at a reduced
rate for distance students enrolled in any of the degrees
offered by Lampeter.
Distance learning students can borrow books from the main University Library,
but can also join the UK Libraries Plus Scheme. This is a co-operative venture
between Higher Education libraries which enables part-time and distance students
to borrow material from other libraries. Distance learning students, who are
registered on a course or research programme leading to a university degree
running for a minimum of one year, may join up to three libraries as a borrower.
More information about the scheme will be sent to you once you have registered
for your course. Please note that the library will need to authorise your application
to the UK Library Plus Scheme and you should have a current Lampeter library
card before applying to join.
If you are interested in studying in this way, but are still unsure about how it will work in practice, please do not hesitate to contact us so that we can discuss the various possibilities with you personally. We can also put you in touch with postgraduate students of the department who are studying or have studied on this basis.
