How to apply

The application process

If you decide that you would like to apply for a programme, you can either download an application pack here or request such a pack from the Registry.  Applications can either be completed on-line or submitted by post.  If submitting by post, the completed application form needs to be returned with the completed references to the Registry (not the Department of Classics).  The Academic Registry then forwards your application to the Department for consideration.

Applicants are expected to have a good first degree (a first or an upper second class honours), although candidates with lower degree classifications may be considered for entry at Postgraduate Certificate or Diploma levels, with the possibility of upgrading to MA if satisfactory progress is made.  As every application is considered on its own merit, places may be offered on the basis of non-standard entry qualification, including maturity and professional qualifications and relevant experience.  Candidates falling into this category are advised to include a short curriculum vitae to enable us to consider the application fully.

All MPhil and PhD candidates are required to submit a 500 word research proposal with their application.  Please do get in touch with us to discuss your proposed research topic before submitting an application.

References

Applicants should arrange for two referees to fill in the required two reference forms.  However, students who have finished or are about to finish a degree awarded by University of Wales, Lampeter only need to provide one reference.  Ideally references should be academic, but in the case of mature students who are returning after a break from academic study, professional or personal (not family) references are acceptable.  If you need advice on references, please do contact us.

References can not be sent by e-mail as they need to be signed by the referee.  References need to be submitted by the applicant to the Registry together with all the other paperwork.

Questions regarding the application process

If you would like to have more information about any of our programmes, would like to discuss your application in more detail, or are not sure which degree to choose, you are most welcome to contact Dr. James Richardson, Director of Postgraduate Studies.  It is also possible to arrange a visit to the department to meet members of staff.

For more general enquiries contact our Departmental Administrator, Siân Davies .  For technical queries regarding the application process contact the Registry Officer for Classics.

Application deadlines

We do not have a deadline for applications, but please allow enough time before the commencement of the course for your application to be processed.  The Registry needs approximately 6 weeks to process your application.  If students apply too close to the start of the Michaelmas or Lent term, it may be necessary to delay the start of their studies in order to get all the paperwork completed.  Students need to be fully enrolled before the start of a teaching term.

If you are interested in applying, but have left it rather late, please do get in touch so that we can discuss the situation.

What happens next?

If we are able to offer you a place, you should normally receive a letter with a decision from the Assistant Registrar within six to eight weeks (although there may be some exceptions to this time-scale).  If you have not heard from us within this period, please do contact the Registry.

Academic Registration

Once you have accepted our offer, you will be sent an enrolment pack with a number of forms, including one to indicate your module choice.  Information about accommodation and financial aspects of your course are also included at this stage.  You do not need to contact either accommodation services or the finance office before this.

At the beginning of your academic studies, we will send you a copy of the Classics Postgraduate Handbook which will give you all the information that you need about studying with us.

Changes to your registration, application or enrolment form

If you cannot afford to take up your place for financial or any other reasons on the date specified on the offer letter, please contact the Registry as it may be possible to delay starting the course and arrange a later start date instead.

If, after sending in your application forms, you would like to change the course that you have applied for, please contact the Registry as soon as possible to receive the appropriate forms.

If you would like to change your module choice after you have sent in an enrolment form, please contact the department as soon as possible at classics@lamp.ac.uk.
