Module description: a) the mother of Jesus in the New Testament; b) early apocryphal texts and the earliest known prayer to the Mother of God; c) Patristic authors: Irenaeus, Gregory of Nyssa, Epiphanius of Salamis, Ephrem the Syrian, Ambrose, Augustine; d) the Theotokos dispute and the Council of Ephesus (431); e) the earliest liturgical celebrations in the Virgin’s honour; f) the Council of Chalcedon (451) and the division of the Church; g) the iconoclast dispute.
