Syllabus:    

This module enables students to consolidate and deepen their knowledge and extend their awareness of the language beyond beginners’ level, and to read some continuous Greek prose.  We will continue to use the textbook Athenaze II, carrying on from where Beginners Greek II finished, to complete your introduction to the grammatical forms and constructions of Ancient Greek.  In addition we will read a selection of extracts from a comprehensive range of Greek authors.

Learning outcomes:

This module seeks to enable students:

  • to gain confidence in translating, understanding and handling the Greek language at intermediate level.
  • to consolidate and further their comprehension of Greek grammar and syntax.
  • to enhance their understanding of Greek literature and culture and to develop your literary skills through close study of a text in the original.

Transferable and other skills involved:

This module seeks to enable students:

  • to develop analytical, critical and problem-solving skills through the study of an ancient language.
  • to develop critical skills through the analysis of the style and content of Greek texts.
  • to enhance the use of written English through linguistic studies.
  • to be able to manage your own programmes of learning with detailed tutorial guidance, and to seek and make use of feedback.

Evaluation (including student evaluation):  

Students will be asked to complete a questionnaire at the end of the module.  This will be used by the Students will be asked to complete a questionnaire at the end of the module. The external examiner will also have the opportunity to make comments and results of the questionnaires will be discussed in the SSCC.
