Choosing a topic:

You will select a Greek or Latin author as the subject for your study, and will read their work (some parts of it in the original Greek or Latin and other parts in translation) to familiarise yourself with the content.  You will then choose a topic for your particular study, and write a 10,000-word dissertation on this author.

You will choose your author in consultation with a member of staff, and he or she will guide you in the choice of a topic within that author’s oeuvre.

In choosing a topic, however, you must bear in mind these two points:

Although your choice of topic may arise out of one of the modules you have taken (and indeed it is natural that it should), it cannot overlap directly with anything you have submitted for assessment.

There must be someone within the department capable of supervising your dissertation.  Click here for a list of staff interests.

Dissertation supervisor:

  • It is the role of your supervisor to offer support and advice while you are writing your dissertation.  You can expect the following of your tutor:
  • To read and comment on your detailed outline.
  • To read and comment on draft chapters (app. 5,000 words in total) of your dissertation.

Further guide-lines on this can be found in the Classics Postgraduate Student Handbook.

Presentation of your dissertation:

Your dissertation must follow the academic conventions laid out in detail in the Classics Postgraduate Student handbook and in the ‘Guide for the Submission of theses’.

Learning outcomes:

  • To develop the student’s critical, analytical and problem-solving skills through the close analysis of primary evidence and secondary literature
  • To develop and enhance the student’s ability to organise their time
