Postgraduate StudiesAdmissions RequirementsMA/Diploma/CertificateApplicants are expected to have a good first degree (a first or an upper second class honours) in Classics, Classical Studies, or other humanities subjects such as English or History, although candidates with lower degree classifications or with degrees from other disciplines may be considered for entry at Postgraduate Certificate or Diploma levels, with the possibility of upgrading to MA if satisfactory progress is made. As every application is considered on its own merit, places may be offered on the basis of non-standard entry qualifications, including maturity and professional qualifications and relevant experience. Occasional postgraduate studentsThis option is available for those students who may be unsure of the specific programme they might wish to take, or whose language skills need to be at a certain level for further postgraduate study (e.g. MA in Classics, MPhil or PhD). Postgraduate occasional students register for individual modules rather than for a full programme. All postgraduate modules can be studied on this basis, but the total number of credits taken by occasional postgraduate students is limited to 40 credits (= 2 modules). Please note that such students cannot choose to register for only 1 module (=20 credits) and that the 40 credits need to be completed within one year. The usual postgraduate entry requirements and application process apply. Students can request a transfer into a degree scheme once they have successfully completed the modules. It is, usually, possible to transfer the 40 credits into the programme chosen. Licence The general entrance requirement is normally a good first degree (a first or upper second class honours) or equivalent qualification, but each application for entrance is given individual consideration. There are, however, three patterns within the Licence, some of which require additional qualifications in either Greek or Latin: Pattern A is for those who are beginning the study of their chosen language from scratch Pattern B is for those with a GCSE (or equivalent) in their chosen language Pattern C is for those with an A Level (or equivalent) in their chosen language
PhDNormally an applicant for a PhD must be registered first for the degree of MPhil and may then be allowed to register for a PhD after working towards the MPhil for at least twelve months. The University currently allows for the possibility of an applicant being admitted directly to study for a PhD, but only when an applicant has already completed and obtained a Master’s degree in a relevant discipline. The Department considers in such cases the applicant’s general performance at Master’s level, but will seek particular feed-back about the quality of the MA thesis. Full-time students will register and pay fees for a period of three years, or, if they have an MA degree from an approved university, for two years. Part-time students must register and pay fees for six years or, with an MA degree from an approved institution, for four years. In the case of an applicant who is in the process of completing a Master’s degree, the applicant’s registration may be upgraded to PhD on successful completion of the Master’s degree. MPhilApplicants are expected to have a good first degree (a first or an upper second class honours) or MA to register for the degree of MPhil. Accreditation of Prior Certificated Learning (APL)APL provides students with the opportunity to have prior learning counted as part of the course that they have applied to. Using APL thus enables students to avoid having to repeat learning already undertaken and to save time by completing a course more quickly. The Accreditation of Prior Certificated Learning (APL) is where credit is awarded for learning that has already been assessed and certificated as part of a completed or partly-completed course or qualification at higher university level. These credits need to be directly relevant to the course of study to be undertaken. Students who would like to gain APL need to contact the Director of Postgraduate Studies, Dr. James Richardson, to discuss this in more detail. English language entry requirementsWe welcome applications from students whose first language is not English. Applications are considered using the same academic criteria as for all other applications. Such students must be competent in both written and spoken English and hold an IELTS score of at least Grade 6.5 or the equivalent.
