AIM(S)
To enable students :
- to understand and assess critically ancient Sparta and the source material related to it.
- to interpret effectively one of the most debated poleis in the history of classical Greece.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this module students should be able to:

- be able to identify the main aspects of the history and society of Sparta
- have a thorough knowledge of the sources and evidence relating to Sparta.
- have a critical understanding of the modern debates regarding Sparta.
- evaluate effectively the problems and issues relating to Spartan history and society.
In addition Level 5 students should be able to:
- demonstrate a knowledge of the main evidence for the history and society of Sparta.
- interpret modern scholarly arguments and debates on Spartan history and society
In addition Level 6 students should be able to:
- to analyse and assess systematically the evidence for the history and society of Sparta.
- to appreciate critically the relative value of the source material on Spartan history and society.
- describe and comment on the modern scholarship on Sparta.

CONTENT
The module follows a chronological outline of Spartan history from the early archaic period to the first half of the fourth century. The first part of the module concentrates on the archaic period, aiming to explore the reality of the extraordinary image of Sparta in the period. The second part examines classical Spartan history from the Persian Wars to the battle of Mantineia, concentrating on the attitude of Sparta towards empire and the influence of the Spartan social situation on Sparta’s foreign relations.
