LEARNING OUTCOMES By the end of this module all students should be able to: A. Subject specific skills and knowledge
B. Transferable skills and knowledge:
CONTENT This module enables students to consolidate and deepen their knowledge and extend their awareness of the language, and to read some continuous Greek prose. We will continue to use the textbook Athenaze II, carrying on from where Greek Intermediate I finished, to complete your introduction to the grammatical forms and constructions of Ancient Greek. In addition we will read a selection of extracts from a Greek author. The module will focus primarily on translating the text and on understanding the grammar and syntax of the Greek. Students will, however, also be strongly encouraged to begin to develop their skills of literary criticism, through discussion of the literary style and content of the Greek, and of the techniques the author employs. The module will facilitate the transition to Greek Advanced I for those who continue study of the language with the department, and enable others to read unadapted original texts on their own with the help of a dictionary and reference grammar on completion of the module. All set text prescription will be translated in class; students will not have to read parts of the set text independently without class consolidation. ASSESSMENT Examination: One two-hour exam (50%) Course work: Two 750 word commentary exercises (average of the two = 25%) One one-hour time test (25%) BIBLIOGRAPHY Essential
