The Employability Unit

Information and Advice

The Employability Unit provides a range of information, resources and practical advice to help students to make a decision about what they want to do when they graduate and support them with achieving this goal. We offer help with career planning, finding paid employment and work experience, accessing postgraduate study, doing voluntary work or taking a gap year.

Careers Information

Our Careers Information Room holds a wide range of online and paper based information to help you, with a wide range of information booklets and magazines that you can take away with you.

You are welcome to call in to the Employability Unit at any time during our opening hours to access this information. If you require assistance with finding any information then please ask to speak to the Information Officer.

You might find some of the following publications useful – you are welcome to call in to the Employability Unit to pick up a copy. Some of these publications can also be accessed online by following the links to the Graduate Prospects website:

This series of information sheets gives suggestions for careers/ occupations that are possible with your degree subject/s.

These give general information about careers in 29 different job sectors.

There are hundreds of these – they give detailed information about specific occupations, covering entry requirements, activities, vacancy sources, salary information and career development.

  • AGCAS Special Interest booklets

These cover a wide range of topics including Making Applications, Job Seeking Strategies, Postgraduate Study and Working Abroad.

  • Prospects Finalist

A magazine packed with information about graduate opportunities for final year students.

  • Prospects Postgrad

A magazine containing useful information about postgraduate study, courses and funding.

  • Prospects Postgraduate Funding Guide

This booklet contains practical information and advice on funding your postgraduate study.

  • Prospects Directory 

A directory packed with information about graduate employers and job opportunities.

Advice and Guidance

A Careers Adviser is available to provide you with advice and guidance on any careers or employment related issues that you may need help with.
The Careers Adviser can assist you with:

  • Planning your career
  • Job seeking strategies
  • Making a decision about postgraduate study and which course to choose
  • Improving your CV
  • Interview techniques
  • Other workplace issues

You are welcome to make an appointment to speak the Careers Adviser at any time during your studies, and you can still access this service after you have graduated. To make an appointment call in to reception or contact us by telephone or email.

Getting Started

Here are a few suggestions to help you get started if you are not sure what you want to do after you graduate:

  • Call in to the Employability Unit and pick up a copy of the “Your Degree – What Next” signpost sheet. These available for each academic subject, and can help you to get started with considering your options.
  • Have a go at using “Prospects Planner”, a computer guidance package that can help you to think about what skills and abilities you have to offer, and matches these to various occupations. You can access Prospects Planner through the computers in the Employability Unit, or via the Graduate Prospects website.
  • At this stage you might find it useful to make an appointment to speak to an adviser and discuss your options. You can make an appointment by calling in to the Employability Unit in person, or contacting us by telephone or email.
  • If you want to do some more research into occupations, jobs sectors or employers you can use the Careers Information folders in the Employability Unit. The Employability Unit also has a range of information on postgraduate study and funding, working and studying abroad, taking a gap year and voluntary work. If you need any help with finding information the Information Officer or Information Assistant will be available to help you.
