Industry Links

Industry logosThe Department has strong links with the thriving media industry in Wales.  We believe in real-world teaching and run very popular work placement modules which enables invaluable experience and insight, boosting any CV, and allowing students to form valuable links within the media industry.

Several of our lecturers are also experienced professional practitioners, and bring a wealth of experience to their teaching – and your learning!  

Outside speakers regally visit the department; recently for example talks were given by Professor Bob Cotton. A renowned practitioner and academic from the Arts Institute at Bournemouth.  Professor Cotton gave a fascinating paper on ‘futurecasting’, which models emergent trends based on the recent history of digital technologies.

Hywel Wiliam, Head of Broadcasting at Ofcom (Wales) talked to staff and students about the regulatory changes facing the media industries at present, with special reference to digital switchover and the changing nature of the audience. 

Carys Evans from S4C talked about challenges facing Welsh language broadcasting with the commencement of ‘digital switchover’. Her discussion was valuable giving important insights on how programmes are funded and the role of audience research in creative amd commercial decisions

David Fanning form the Tin Drum Media Consultancy discussed exciting and cutting-edge innovations in electronic magazine publishing, which were very well received by our production students.

Richard Turner from NESTA detailed opportunities for students to develop business plans for interactive media production.
