The Department of History, founded in the 1880s by the famous medieval historian, T. F. Tout (who went on to found the History Department at what later became the University of Manchester), is one of the oldest in the United Kingdom. We have four full-time members of academic staff, and several part-time members. We have a number of associated academic staff - honorary professors and fellows - who visit Lampeter and assist in undergraduate (and postgraduate) teaching.

We offer BA degrees in History and Medieval Studies, as well as taught Masters (MA) and research (M.Phil. and Ph.D.) degrees. We also contribute to degrees in Ancient and Medieval History, Church History and Film Studies. If you would like information about other degree schemes, please contact the Admissions Tutors for those degrees, or consult departmental web pages.
In its History degrees, the department offers an attractive, wide-ranging syllabus that enables it to compete effectively with departments more than twice its size. One of the most valuable features is the freedom you have to construct your own degree programme. While a nucleus of core courses ensures a balanced degree, you are otherwise free to specialize in particular areas or periods of History. The modules at present on offer include, besides more conventional courses, the study of literature, film and the visual arts. You are thus able to follow a conventional degree programme or construct a more adventurous and innovatory programme of your own devising.
We are committed to high-quality teaching. There is a great deal of small-group and individual tutorial work. All our lecturers are research-active, and this expertise is fed into the classroom, ensuring that our modules are up-to-date not only in design but in content. Our option modules and special subjects, in particular, reflect the research strengths of the department, and you can be sure that the lecturer concerned is an expert in that field.
By far the most distinctive feature of Lampeter, however, is the close and harmonious relationship between staff and students, which arises from the unique nature and size of this small traditional university. This means that we can help you to study effectively - the first-year course begins with study-skills sessions, which our system of individual essay tutorials builds on. You can also learn the skills of the historian in a personal way not possible in larger institutions. In fact, inculcating the skills of the historian is one of the major features of our History syllabus.

The department encourages you to take a generous view of what the study of the past involves. You will be trained to handle a wide variety of historical materials, documentary, literary, oral, and visual, as well as to investigate how historians have constructed and represented the past. Most History students choose to study the subject because of their interest in and enjoyment of the past, and we aim to make the study of History an enjoyable as well as an academically stimulating experience. However, a History degree can also be an excellent springboard for entering a variety of professions. At Lampeter we provide you with a training that enables you to acquire a range of intellectual and personal skills, as well as self-confidence and the capacity to work independently. A degree in History will develop your powers of analysis, logical thought and argument. Our small group teaching enables you to develop your skills of verbal presentation and fosters the ability to work as the member of a team, while our system of individual tutorials encourages you to improve your written powers of communication. These skills of research, assimilation, comprehension, analysis, and communication, are real assets in the employment market.
