A PhD is a substantial and original piece of research leading to an 80 000 - 100 000 word thesis, usually completed over 3 years (or longer if you chose to study part time). People do a PhD for a variety of reasons, from career development to personal interest. Your PhD research will be supervised by an experienced scholar who will help you to achieve your personal objectives.
An MPhil is an original piece of research leading to a 50 000 - 60 000 word thesis, usually completed over 1 to 3 years (or longer if you chose to study part time). For students who want to do graduate research rather than a taught course, and who may not be qualified to enter directly into a PhD, the MPhil is an excellent choice.
There are no age limits, but we usually expect PhD students to have a Master’s degree in a relevant subject. If you do not have a Master’s degree, or do not feel ready for research at doctoral level, you can start by applying for an MPhil and upgrade to a PhD after 1-2 years with the permission of the University.

Either at home or in Lampeter; either full-time or part-time.
"What bought me here to Lampeter were the human resources – the expertise, availability, and academic reputation of the resident professors and scholars of the university. Once here, the number of academic opportunities that I have found – including lecture series, teaching opportunities, and off-campus study trips – has pleasantly surprised me. There is no denying that Lampeter is a unique setting for serious scholarly research: a renowned but intimate academic community, an internationally-recognized place of scholarship, and a local and regional setting offering outdoor adventure and a wealth of cultural and historical resources."
