The PHD involves a scheme of further study and research, the results of which are incorporated in a thesis judged to constitute an original contribution to learning and to give evidence of systematic study and of ability to relate the results of such study to the general body of knowledge in the subject.
Admission to such a scheme of study and research is normally contingent on the candidate having obtained a first degree with at least a good II.i grade (or its equivalent).
The candidature may be either full-time (internal or external) and last for a minimum of three years and a maximum of five years, or part-time (external only) and last for a minimum of five years and a maximum of nine years.
Candidates are normally initially registered for the M.Phil. degree and then, provided that satisfactory progress has been made during their first year, admitted to the Ph.D. candidature.
