9 Equipment not owned by UWL
9.1 Student PCs in Halls of Residence
Student PCs in Halls of Residence may be freely used for any purpose, as long as any use of the UWL campus LAN complies with this AUP and use of the Internet also complies with the JANET AUP.
Students are not allowed to:
- Set up their personal computers to act as servers, or be part of any unauthorised file sharing network like Kazza, Napster, Grokster etc. If in doubt consult UCS.
- Connect any device to the network socket in their room other than the computer approved for connection by UCS
- Connect any other computing device to their one approved computer (daisy chaining) thus sharing the connection to the LAN with others.
Students must keep their accounts with UWL paid up or the network socket in their room may be disconnected from the LAN.
Students who have taken advantage of the facility to connect their computer to the UWL LAN hereby grant UWL Technical staff permission to inspect their computer at any time, especially if that student is suspected of breaching this AUP.
9.2 JANET Roaming Service
UWL is intending to join the JANET Roaming Service, EduRoam. This service will allow staff and students from other member institutions to log on to the network here at UWL using the user name and password granted to them by their home institution with no intervention needed from UCS.
Once the service is active, and subject to the other conditions of this Acceptable Use Policy being adhered to, staff and students from other member institutions are hereby granted permission to log on to the UWL campus network using any of our public access PCs or using their own wireless-networking-equipped PC, free of charge.
9.3 Other Equipment used on campus
Anyone given temporary permission to connect their equipment to the UWL campus network (e.g. a conference delegate, a visiting member of staff from another HE institution etc.), may use that equipment for any purpose, as long as any use of the UWL campus LAN complies with this AUP and use of the Internet also complies with the JANET AUP.
Such temporary Users are not allowed to:
- Set up their personal computers to act as servers, or be part of any unauthorised file sharing network like Kazza, Napster, Grokster etc. If in doubt consult UCS.
- Connect any device to the network socket in their room other than the computer approved for connection by UCS
- Connect any other computing device to their one approved computer (daisy chaining) thus sharing the connection to the LAN with others.
Any fees due for the use of this facility must be paid promptly or UCS will revoke the permission to connect to the UWL LAN.
Anyone who has taken advantage of the facility to connect their computer to the UWL LAN hereby grants UWL Technical staff permission to inspect their computer at any time, especially if that person is suspected of breaching this AUP.
