1.1 Introduction
The use of networked Personal Computers (PCs) as a work tool, a research tool and a communications tool has become essential in modern times. Today, nearly all office-based employees in the western world have access to a personal computer with e-mail facilities, and many of those have always-on Internet access as well. This certainly describes the staff and students here at UWL, many of whom could not function without ready access to computing facilities, especially e-mail and the Internet.
To meet this need, UWL invests substantial sums of money each year in ICT equipment and software for the benefit of all staff and students.
This document:
- sets out permissible uses of any ICT equipment and software supplied by or used on UWL premises, including but not limited to PCs and printers, the UWL LAN, all central servers, e-mail facilities and the Internet
- specifies the prohibited uses of the above
- states what monitoring will take place
- sets out acceptable online behaviour
- stipulates unauthorised access areas, in terms of both UWL facilities and on the Internet
- sets out privacy rules in relation to other Users
- sets out privacy rules in relation to UWL’s right to monitor
and
- stipulates possible disciplinary consequences for a breach of these rules.
