Post-Study Work (PSW) Scheme

The Post-Study Work (PSW) Scheme replaces the former International Graduates Scheme.

The new PSW scheme enables students from outside the EEA who have successfully completed and obtained a Bachelor's degree, Master’s degree, postgraduate certificate/diploma or PhD to work in the UK for up to 24 months upon completion of their studies without needing a work permit

Successful applicants will be granted two years’ immigration permission to live and work in the UK.

There are no restrictions on the type of work you may do once you have been granted a Tier 1 (Post-Study Work) visa but you cannot be a doctor in training. You may also set up your own business.

To apply for the Tier 1 (Post-Study Work) visa under the points-based system and be accepted into the PSW category, you must pass a points-based assessment.
You must score 95 points in total:

  • 20 points for your University qualification (Bachelor’s degree, Masters, Postgraduate Certificate or Diploma, PhD)
  • 20 points for studying at a UK institution (i.e. the University of Wales Lampeter)
  • 20 points for your immigration status (student)
  • 15 points for applying within 12 months of first being informed that you have obtained your qualification
  • 10 points for English language (automatically given since your degree was undertaken through English)
  • 10 points for available maintenance (funds).

You can use the points-based calculator on the UK Border Agency website (www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/pointscalculator) to calculate how many points you have and whether you are eligible to work in the United Kingdom under this scheme.
