Two out of Six for Lampeter!

Of the six Lent Talks being broadcast on BBC Radio 4 this Spring, University of Wales, Lampeter staff have been asked to present two. Dr Sarah Boss and Rabbi Professor Dan Cohn-Sherbok will be providing talks as part of a series that also includes the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Reverend Rowan Williams.

Within her talk, Dr Sarah Boss considers the pain that Mary experienced witnessing the death of her son Jesus on the cross, pain that any mother who loses her child will understand. But death is also the means of rebirth to eternal life and so can be seen as completing the circle of our lives. The title of the address is “The Seven Last Words of Jesus from the Cross. ‘Woman, behold your Son. Son, behold your mother.’”

Rabbi Professor Dan Cohn-Sherbok’s address focuses on words from the cross and is titled “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” It is highly unusual that a Rabbi should be asked to give a talk as part of a Lent series. Within his talk, Rabbi Professor Cohn-Sherbok comments “Even though Jews do not believe that Jesus is Messiah and Lord, his words on the cross have important religious significance for Jewry. The notion of divine suffering, which is at the heart of Christian theology, is paralleled by the Jewish view that God suffers when his people suffer.”

Dr Sarah Boss’s talk is the second in the series of Lent Talks and will be broadcast on Sunday 7 March at 17:40 on Radio 4, and repeated at 19:45 on Saturday 13 March 2004.

Rabbi Professor Dan Cohn-Sherbok’s talk is the fourth in the series and will be broadcast on Sunday 21 March at 17:40, being repeated on Saturday 27 March at 19:45.
