DSA – Disabled Student Allowance

The Disabled Student Allowance (DSA) will be awarded to full-time and part-time undergraduate students and certain full-time and part-time postgraduate students who can show that they have a disability, enduring physical or mental health condition or specific learning difficulty which will in some way affect their ability to study. A student's Local Education Authority (LEA) is responsible for deciding whether a student is eligible for the DSA, after the completion of a DSA application.

Once a students' LEA has agreed to fund their DSA, every student will be required to undergo a Needs Assessment, which will examine the individual needs of each student, and will put forward recommendations for the support that may be required to aid a student in the successful and timely completion of their degree. We currently have a highly experienced visiting assessor, Phil Judd, from the Bridgend Assessment Centre, who usually comes to Lampeter twice a month.

The DSA is intended to help pay for extra costs a student may have to incur when studying for a course, as a direct result of your disability, enduring physical or mental health condition or specific learning difficulty. The allowance can help with the cost of non-medical (usually academic) personal help, items of specialist equipment, travel and other course-related costs.
